Joe’s festival debut is character-forming

Former Hathersage Players’ actor Joe Fairbrother is performing his brand new character comedy show at the Buxton Festival Fringe this weekend.

Joe (26), who grew up in Hathersage and attended Hope Valley College, has been performing on the London comedy circuit for a couple of years.

While living in Hathersage, he performed in many of the drama group’s productions and hosted gala talent shows.

Joe’s show at the Fringe, entitled Characters, is a selection of his lovable misfit characters. These include Wakefield’s only cycling proficiency examiner, a cash-in-hand Pentecostal pastor on his UK Religion Roadshow, and the organiser of Solihull’s Swingers Weekend 2011.

Another of Joe’s characters is the chairman of a village parish council, and a nod to Joe’s own experience of local village life. “I find the goings on in a village absolutely hilarious”, explains Joe. “But I’m celebrating that, I’m not mocking it (promise). There may, however, be more than a passing resemblance to one or two local characters, but I couldn’t possibly comment”.

This will be Joe’s first time performing at the Buxton Festival Fringe. He will also be taking his show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival next month.

Characters is at Underground Venues, The Square, Buxton. tonight (Friday, July 15) and tomorrow at 9.15pm. Tickets £5 - £8.50. Box office: www.underthefringe.com / 0208 144 0070.
