YOUNG performers from north Derbyshire made an impact in the big arena during 2012.

Twenty-four youngsters from the Academy of Dance in Chesterfield performed in the prestigious Dance Proms at the Royal Albert Hall last month.

The Chesterfield contingent performed a showgirl musical theatre called Allegretto and appeared alongside Strictly Come Dancing’s Darren Bennett & Lilia Kopylova and Top Hat’s Tom Chambers and Summer Strallen.

Choreographer Rachel Littlewood commented: ‘Dance Proms was a spectacular event and the students loved every minute of it. Dancing on stage at the Royal Albert Hall was an incredible experience and to perform alongside celebrity dancers was a dream come true for the girls. The finale was a real highlight – seeing over 450 talented dancers on stage gave us all goose bumps!”

It was the second time that the academy was invited to perform in the showpiece event where they were reunited with Darren Bennett and Lilia Kopylova.

Darren and Lilia commented: “We were so proud to return to Dance Proms for the second year running. It’s such a fantastic atmosphere and great opportunity for young people to perform at an event of this scale and professionalism.”

To qualify for Dance Proms, teachers and their students submitted a short dance piece featuring original choreography in any genre. This year the genres ranged from traditional ballet and tap, to cheerleading and Latin American dance.
