Instead of the usual proscenium arch stage at the town’s Civic Hall, the cast will be in the middle of the audience on a specially built thrust stage which reaches out into the auditorium.

Said director Andrea Powell: “Stirrings is a musical documentary which charts a significant time in the area’s history. It is an ideal show to perform in the round and we hope audiences will appreciate being in the heart of the action.”

Stirrings tells the story of what had become known as The Outrages. It was a period in the area’s history of 150 years ago that saw the first clashes between unions and managements. And the violence was not just confined to Sheffield. In the 1850s, the Derbyshire Times reported several incidents in Dronfield in which factories and water wheels were blown up.

The Stirrings is almost an institution in itself. Revived many times both professionally and by amateurs, it has become the area’s most potent and enduring musical documentaries. The story of universal prejudice, labour relations, civic responsibility and social welfare is as relevant now as it always has been.

The confrontation had no winners or losers but the legacy of what was achieved remains.

The story is told against a background of Music Hall, sketch revue, monologue and folk songs and the music is for the most part authentic and traditional to the area.

Andrea says of the show: “Whenever people discuss Stirrings there is always a buzz because it is so well known and well loved. It is a fresh today as it was when it was first produced in 1966. And it deals with a period in Sheffield’s history that became a blueprint for what was to come.”

The Stirrings in Sheffield on Saturday Night is at Dronfield Civic Hall from Wednesday, October 23, to Saturday, October 26, and there is a Saturday matinee. For tickets, call 01246 416364.
