Fancy wine bars and gastro pubs are all well and good but you can’t beat a nice cup of tea.

Fancy wine bars and gastro pubs are all well and good but you can’t beat a nice cup of tea.

I’m in Chesterfield town centre trawling the shops and rifling through the remnants of the sale rail. Normally, I’d amble home for lunch but my weary legs and even wearier arms (carrying lots of bags is hard work!) are begging me to break the habit.

I seek refuge in No 10 The Tea Rooms, having made a mental note weeks earlier to call when time allowed me to sample the tempting and extensive menu.

It’s the busiest time of the week to put the tea room to the test - a Saturday lunchtime when the place is rammed.

Plonking myself down at one of two vacant tables, I survey my fellow diners while I wait for the menu. They are mainly mums and daughters as well as groups of senior citizens to whom the waiting staff give particularly heart-warming care and attention.

Poring over the extensive menu, I’m spoilt for choice. Sandwiches, paninis, toasties, scrambled eggs, cream teas, ice creams, cakes - I want them all!

I settle for a cheese and onion toastie (£5.95), which arrives with a generous helping of salad. The toasted sandwich is stuffed with mild Derby cheddar and red onion, accompanied by salad leaves, yellow pepper, tomato, pineapple, strawberry and grape. topped off with a light French dressing.

Although that would normally suffice for a lunchtime snack, I have to sample the full tearoom experience. On the last binge before the diet begins, I opt for sticky toffee cake and double cream (£3.50). This melt-in the mouth moist cake glazed with smooth icing is up there with the best I’ve tasted.

My visit is slightly spoilt by the absence of knife and fork - I have to ask for them - and no white sugar in the bowl, a must for the sweet-toothed customer thirsting for a pot of English Breakfast Tea (£1.70).

But the quality of the food - especially that cake - means I’ll be back next time I’m on a shopping trip and in need of a pick-me-up.
