CHRISTMAS came early for members of the Kinder Children’s Choirs of the High Peak as they rubbed shoulders with the stars during a concert at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall.

Kinders’ concert choir stepped into the limelight to perform in front of 2,000 people at the Christmas Carolling with Russell Grant event on Monday evening, featuring special guest artist Russell Watson.

The Peak District choristers provided the backing vocals for such favourites as Adeste Fideles, Panis Angelicus, O Holy Night and Pie Jesu.

Joyce Ellis, Founder Director of the Kinder Children’s Choirs of the High Peak, said the concert had been a wonderful experience and a test of their professionalism and concentration.

“More used to ordinary acoustic performances, this was a new experience for most of the choristers who had to find their notes and harmonies amid the huge noise and sound of a symphony orchestra and soloists, magnified even more through microphones,” she said.

“The choir was involved in nearly all the numbers and, as usual, they had prepared their songs from memory.

“However, they had to learn them without knowledge of the orchestral interludes between verses, and new moves had to be learned ‘on the hoof’ during a three-hour rehearsal with a new conductor and all the other musicians in the afternoon.”

She added: “Some of the young ladies in the choir thought that Christmas had come early especially when they met Russell Watson in the interval!

“Russell was very gracious in his encouragement of our young singers.”

l Local music lovers will have the opportunity to hear the Kinder Choristers in a Christmas family concert at the Octagon, Pavilion Gardens, Buxton, on Sunday December 23, at 4pm.
