As I walked inside, I was really impressed with the decor. It was modern and fresh without losing that traditional local pub feel.

There were plenty of alcoves and niches to nestle up in, magnificent chunky wood tables, and stone features above the windows and arches with the look softened by cushions aplenty.

Despite the price of the starters being a little off-putting, the king prawn and risotto ball fried in breadcrumbs, served with rocket leaves and citrus dressing, at £5.95, was well presented and very tasty.

All the pub food usuals were on the main course menu, and at reasonable prices compared to the starters. They included haddock and chips, pie of the day and lasagne. There were also more adventurous dishes such as chicken stuffed with soft cheese wrapped in smoked bacon as well as chestnut, mushroom and stilton pie.

I opted for the wilted spinach, roasted peppers, tomato and feta bake with potato fondant and salad garnish at £8.95. My dad chose the 8oz rump steak, rosemary, skewered mushroom and tomato, beer battered onion rings, dressed leaves and (most importantly) hand cooked chips (£11.95). I always appreciate an eatery which adds hand cooked chips to their menu, so ordered myself a portion - a decision I regretted only because the portions were more than enough on their own without adding extras - but they were delicious, as was my feta bake.

There was a fairly limited choice of desserts, reminiscent of the school pudding list I used to have, like syrup roly poly, apple pie, chocolate log and vanilla sponge; however the vanilla sponge and syrup roly poly tasted great and the custard was excellent.

Overall, a great dining experience, from the friendly staff to the unusual cutlery. I would definitely like to dine there again if I find myself out along the A38.
