Organisers of the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival in Buxton expect this year’s 20th anniversary showcase to be the biggest yet.

Three weeks of non-stop celebrations, featuring 53 full-scale productions from 30 different performing groups, will take place at Buxton Opera House and the Pavilion Arts Centre between July 27 and August 17, attracting visitors from around the world.

This year, St Anne’s Music and Drama Society are travelling from Toronto with The Gondoliers, while the all-professional Lyric Opera Productions from Ireland will present The Mikado and HMS Pinafore.

The Festival’s own renowned Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company will perform four brand new productions.

The most significant innovation for 2013 is the introduction of UNIFest, featuring ten university Gilbert and Sullivan Societies. An additional four groups will participate in the annual Youth Festival.

And a 50-strong group from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro bring their full-scale performance of Trial by Jury – in Portuguese.

Another innovation in 2013 is a three-day Symposium – ‘The Magic that is Gilbert & Sullivan - featuring leading Gilbert and Sullivan experts from around the world.

Last summer’s event attracted around 30,000 people to the spa town along with an estimated £4 million of additional tourism revenue.
