The real ale revolution has taken Derbyshire by storm with more breweries in the county than anywhere else in England.

Pubs have got on board with the 70-year brewing high and one such place is the popular and multi-award-winning Arkwright Arms at Sutton-cum-Duckmanton.

The pub has an established reputation for offering an ever-changing choice of superb, hand-pulled beers and real ciders but is probably less well-known for its food.

We visited on a Sunday and it was packed with diners tucking into very hearty looking Sunday lunches.

The pub offers a good selection of traditional, home-cooked dishes, all very reasonably priced, as well as a specials board.

I chose the home-made shallot, Stilton and walnut tart while my partner ordered the steak and ale pie from the specials.

Service was quick and friendly with knowledgeable staff more than willing to recommend an ale or a cider.

Our meals came with a selection of vegetables and chips.

The tart’s pastry was delicious - creamy yet crumbly and one of the best I’ve tasted.

The crispy home-made chips were just as I like them and the portions were very generous.

My partner was impressed with his pie. There was plenty of tasty, tender steak in a rich ale gravy.

For pudding I tucked into the classic favourite jam roly-poly while my partner had apricot crumble.

Both came with plenty of custard and the comforting puds brought back memories of traditional - and delicious- school dinners.

The Arkwright Arms is a place to relax with a good pint.

It’s a proper local, already celebrated for its ale and as I discovered the food is also worth recommending.

It’s straightforward, tasty and good quality pub grub. I will be going back.
