This golden couple waltzed into each others arms at a Chesterfield dance and married only months later after a whirlwind romance.

William Docherty (75) and his wife Norma (77), of Lime Avenue, Staveley, met at the dance hall above the old Odeon cinema in October 1958.

The night was coming to an end when William plucked up the courage and asked Norma for a dance. He then escorted her back home on the bus.

They married just five months later at St Michael's in Brimington and went on honeymoon to London.

Mrs Docherty previously worked as a shop assistant in Hollingwood village shop and Mr Docherty worked as a painter and decorator.

They have three sons, two granddaughters, two grandsons, a great granddaughter and a great grandson.

The couple's family organised a surprise party for them held at the village hall in Staveley where they enjoyed a buffet.

They're going to the Isle of White in May to continue the celebrations.

Mrs Docherty said: "It has been a marvellous 50 years and I couldn't ask for a better husband."
