Veteran Edwin scoops Grandmasters Trophy

Edwin Smith has scooped the Grandsmasters Trophy for the first time after competing in the Chesterfield Snooker League for 64 years, writes John Allan.

Former Derbyshire cricketer Edwin, 78, defeated Terry Wilkinson 3-1 in the semi before going on Edwin, 78, winning 3-1.

Edwin then faced David Wilkinson in the final and in a close-run match he pipped David 3-2.Meanwhile, the semi finals of the Pairs Competition have been played at Hasland mwc on a superbly-prepaired table by David Lomas, games secretary at the club.

John Hall and Carl Kissane of Shirebrook faced the pairing of Kennedy Wright and Glen Shawcroft, of Alfreton.

In the first frame Wright hit a 42, and Hall replied with a 41, as the Alfreton pair took the first frame 65-57.

The second frame saw Shawcroft hit a superb 77 and took the frame 77-05.

The third fame went to the Shirebrook pair but the fourth frame went to the Alfreton duo ran out 3-1 winners.

Here are some dates. On Monday, April 16, at Grassmoor, the team of three final will be played.

On Tuesday, 17th, at Hasland, the pairs final will be staged.

Next Wednesday, the handicap semi final between John Hunter and M Taylor will take place.

On Friday, April 20, at Grassmoor, the handicap semi final between team mates Joel Walker and A Carty will take place. This is a match not to be missed.
