Plans are pressing ahead with the formation of Buxton Rugby League Club, with the new team hopeful of being set up in time for the start of next season.
As the Advertiser revealed last week, a new club is being formed out of Buxton which is set to bring the 13-a-side code back to the High Peak.
The new club would effectively replace Hope Valley Hawks, the Castleton-based outfit that disbanded last year.
Organiser Tommy McGuigan confirmed that the club is still in its early stages, but that they have already applied to enter a league and potentially have a home ground fixed up.
He said: “We’re still very much in the early stages but I have registered the club.
“The next stage is waiting for things to fall into place such as league formations, fixtures etc.
“We are applying to enter the Midlands Merit league, which has two divisions. The lowest tier is a relatively new set-up so it would be our first choice.
“At the moment we are going to be playing matches at Buxton RUFC’s home of Sunnyfields and we have been given a provisional ‘yes’ by the committee there.
“But as I say nothing is fully agreed yet.”
If the newly-formed side does use Sunnyfields as its base, it would mean rugby taking place in Buxton for the majority of the year.
