John Sheridan was relieved of his duties as manager of Chesterfield FC for the long term good of the club, according to chief executive Chris Turner.
His three-year spell in the Spireites hot-seat came to an end on Tuesday, following the 1-1 home draw against Rotherham.
Turner said: “It wasn’t what had happened over the last four games, it has to be remembered that we have only won eight games out of the last 40.
“John’s position was never an issue last season, he had everybody’s full backing and in the summer he signed players he wanted.
“Then the season kicked off and the decision to relieve John was made in the long-term interests of the club.
“During John’s time here, apart from the relegation which tarnished things, it has been great for the fans. They had a championship victory and a trophy win at Wembley.’’
After Sheridan gained promotion, his deal was extended to the end of the 2014/15 season, and currently he remains an employee of the club.
Taking over as caretaker manager is Tommy Wright, who has been Sheridan’s assistant with the Blues for the last three years.
Turner said: “Tommy is enthusiastic and he has a great wok ethic. He has a passion for football that spreads to other people.
“He now has an opportunity for himself.
“The objective remains the same - to bounce back into League One.
“All fans want to see is their team winning, no matter who is on the touchline.
“Tommy’s position will be monitored over a period with the long term in mind. We aren’t going to be doing something tomorrow. We are not looking at making an immediate appointment.’’
Wright, who played for Leeds United, Leicester City and Middlesbrough, will be assisted by Blues coach Mark Crossley.
Wright’s first match in charge will be on Saturday when Chesterfield travel to Gillingham, one of only two teams in the division who have won all their games.
