Chesterfield stalwart Jack Lester will leave the club at the end of the season.
The veteran forward is the Spireites’ top scorer this term with nine but has been unable to tie down a regular first team spot under manager Paul Cook.
The 37-year-old said: “I was told by the manager in February this will be my last season at the football club.
“I was disappointed, I would have liked to have stayed. I think that’s a natural reaction by anyone who is told they are no longer wanted in employment at a club.”
Lester joined the club from Nottingham Forest in 2007 and quickly became a fan favourite.
The former Grimsby Town, Doncaster and Sheffield United man has scored 92 times during his six years with Chesterfield.
He said it will be difficult to say goodbye.
“It’s been a real special part of my life being here and something I’m very proud of,” he said.
“I’m just so thankful for everyone at the club for giving me the opportunity to play. It’s been brilliant and I look forward to the next stage of my career.”
Lester played a pivotal role in the 2010/11 promotion season and captained the side to victory at Wembley in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy 12 months ago.
Chesterfield manager Paul Cook added: “He’s been a fantastic stalwart for this football club and that will never be forgotten. “Every game between now and the end of the season people will have the chance to show how much he means to them, that is reflected by the sentiments at the football club.
“We all wish Jack the very best for the future.”
