With the capture of experienced defender Terrell Forbes, Chesterfield FC could have solved their right back problem.
The right side of the back line has long been an issue for manager John Sheridan but he could have found a solution with the signature of the 30-year-old player.
Forbes began his career at West Ham but made his name at QPR playing at right-back where he helped the Loftus Road outfit to a promotion and won player of the year laurels.
Forbes quickly admits that the Spireites boss’s level of interest played a big part in his decision to move north from Leyton Orient where he has been for the last two years.
He said: “John Sheridan was a very big influence. He’s been trying to get me for two years and I know he is a really good manager.
“The stadium is beautiful. I played there with Orient last season. It was a 0-0 draw and there was a really good atmosphere.’’
Another factor which helped persuade Forbes was information he received from Blues left back Nathan Smith who was a team-mate at Yeovil.
Forbes said: “He told me it was a good club and that the fans are great.’’
And he could find himself playing alongside his old team mate again, on the opposite flank, as Chesterfield bid to bounce straight back to League One.
For the last two seasons the right back slot has been a head-scratcher for the Blues chief.
After loanee Jack Hunt returned to Huddersfield Town, Drew Talbot was moved back to fill the position.
Talbot was best known for playing wide right in midfield but he toiled hard in defence and won plaudits for his efforts.
If Forbes proves a big hit at right back, it would free up Talbot to operate elsewhere.
Forbes, however, is confident he can play in any defensive position.
He said: “I’m a bit of a utility player. I can play anywhere along the back line.
“I’m a hard-working player, I give my all and I don’t miss many games.’’
And he is clear what Chesterfield’s ambitions are for the following season.
Forbes said: “My aim is to win every game and win promotion. That’s a must.’’
Following his stint with QPR, Forbes moved to Grimsby and had spells with Oldham and Yeovil before switching to Leyton Orient in 2010.
