Sheffield Steelers have confirmed the signing of 26-year-old forward Ryan Menei as they look ahead to the new season.

Menei led the Tulsa Oilers in scoring last season with 34 goals and 82 points.

Head coach Doug Christiansen said “There is no question that Ryan is an elite offensive player. However, what really pushed me to offer Ryan a contract was the reviews people gave him. His former coaches and teammates raved about his attitude and skill set.

“Ryan will be a player who puts up numbers for us but I am not signing him to carry the load, I merely expect him to be one of a number of very good players who can help lead us on any given night.”

The campaign couldn’t have a tougher start, with a road trip to Coventry on the opening day and a mouth-watering home opener at Motorpoint Arena the night after.

Christiansen said: “It has been fun to pore over our schedule the last few days and see the path that hopefully leads us to a title.

“We know it will be incredibly tough. Our first weekend will give us a great measuring stick. Coventry has always been a tough place to play, let alone opening night. They have made some excellent signings and will be one of the title favourites.

“I am sure the Steeler fans will have opening night circled on their calendar. It will be a great game between two of the title contenders.”

The home opener against Nottingham on September 8 will also see the return of the country’s leading British player, Robert Dowd to the Steelers side.

“What a game to be coming home to” he said. “I’ve missed Sheffield/Nottingham games whilst I have been away in Belfast and Sweden.”
