This weekend’s fixture against Belper saw Chesterfield Panthers 1st XV enjoy winning form after they beat Belper 29-10 in their home clash.
Belper were well organised and drilled and with strong running backs, which proved difficult for Panthers to make in-roads.
Despite Panthers’ forward power, the deadlock was not broken until acting captain and man of the match Rob Collins decided to take the game to the opposition.
Breaking the gain line before setting up the ever dependable Carl Walker to touch down. Liam Alford added the conversion.
Panthers’ next points came from Liam Alford converting a 30 yard penalty. Panthers looked comfortable until the referee awarded a yellow card to Andy Hughes for holding on. This was followed with a yellow card for Joe Walton for the same offence.
With Panthers down to 13 men, Belper used their advantage to crawl back with a converted try and a penalty resulting in both sides all square at the end of the first half.
Panthers moved the ball wide, causing problems at the scrum and ruck and creating good quick balls at the breakdown, enabling scrum half Jordan Grayson to set up decisive moves.
A quick ball found Liam Alford, who drove forward and sucked the defending full-back in before off-loading to Ben Bunting for his maiden try. Liam Alford added the conversion.
Panthers’ Collins ran 60 yards evading defenders to score a fantastic try. Glenn Grayson converted. Jordan Grayson scored Panthers’ bonus try.
