Matlock Cycling Club member Richard Thoday has competed in the first penny farthing race to be held in the City of London for more than 100 years.

And he gained second place in the event which took place in the Smithfield Market area and attracted around 10,000 spectators.

The penny farthing race, in which there were 35 competitors, took place over a 1k course and Richard - pictured above - took the silver medal astride a machine he built himself.
