Fourteen-year-old Abbie’s award comes in a year when she has won two gold medals and two silver for Team GB at the European Youth Olympic Festival and was selected as the Team GB flagbearer for the closing ceremony.

Eric, 16, is currently ranked second overall in Great Britain and is a member of the England Judo Squad and the Elite Talent Squad.

He represented Great Britain at the European Cadet Championships, and is a three-time British Champion.

Olympic silver medallist and top BBC sports pundit Colin Jackson CBE was the guest speaker at the event.

Abbie was presented with her winner’s trophy by the Deputy Mayor of the City of Derby, Cllr Shiraz Khan, and three-time Olympic swimmer Ross Davenport.

In February this year she broke the British and English Age Group record for the 200m breaststroke, and in July she won her fourth consecutive gold medal at the National Championships in the 200m breaststroke – winning seven medals at the event overall.

She is a member of the British Swimming World Class Potential Programme for athletes, who have the potential to qualify for the 2016 Olympics and medal at the 2020 Olympics.

Meanwhile Eric now combines his A-levels with training three days a week at the newly-opened British Judo Centre of Excellence.

Eric is the youngest athlete at the centre and insists his aim is to compete in the 2020 Olympic Games due to be held in Tokyo, Japan.

The Derbyshire Sports Awards 2013 was held at the Roundhouse in Derby and was attended by 270 people.

The evening saw trophies awarded in 11 categories, as some of Derbyshire’s most committed sports volunteers, coaches and athletes gathered to celebrate.
