Delighted showjumper Nicola Roe, of Alfreton, is heading for the national amateur championships after a sparkling victory in a qualifying round.

Nicole produced a polished performance over 1.10-metre jumps at Harrogate Riding Centre to qualify for the finals of the event, which is sponsored by horse-feed specialists, Dodson & Horrell.

Riding Michelle Lomax’s 16-year-old dark brown mare, Emmy II, she was drawn third to go in a six-horse jump-off. And she came up with a double clear round in a fast time of 32.40 seconds.

Two other riders, Polly Douglas, aboard Brandonview Oscar, and Mark Poskitt, riding Kilmanahan Diamond, also completed double clear rounds, but Nicola’s time was better by two and three seconds respectively.

She was also involved in the play-off on another horse, Tamara VI, and they finished fifth after recording 12 faults and a time of 50.38 seconds.

However, her victory on Emmy II was good enough to gain qualification for the finals, which will be held at Aintree Equestrian Centre in Liverpool from Wednesday, November 18 to Sunday, November 22.

Nicola, who works as en employment law solicitor, is one of the most proficient show jumpers on the amateur circuit. She has represented Britain many times, both in international team events and individually at senior level.
