North Derbyshire Chargers’ youth teams recently headed down to Creswell in the blistering sunshine for a training session led by two professional rugby league players.
Ian Hardman and Ben Hellewell made the trip down from Featherstone to lead the training.
Both play for Featherstone Rovers RLFC, currently second in this year’s Kingstone Press Championship and both having played at Super League level for St Helen’s and Warrington respectively.
The session consisted of small skill-based stations that were not only enjoyable but also demanded a high level of skill.
The under 16s joined up with the under 14s, and a great team feeling was present throughout the session.
Both teams looked strong, all that was needed was the Open Age for the full Chargers outfit.
The training was a great way for both teams to develop their understanding of the game and learn new things that could be a great addition to the already powerful Chargers arsenal.
Both Ian and Ben were great with us they showed great patience and were fantastic at talking us through complex tackle techniques and ways to slow the game down and play on our terms.
I feel that a huge thank you is required to both Ian and Ben and also Featherstone Rovers.
One player said: “I really enjoyed the session, they taught us everything we needed in a game, and gave us great pointers for when we are in game situations.”
The under 14s had smiles after the session and they all enjoyed it and said they found working with the professionals and playing together with the under 16s very beneficial and incredibly enjoyable.
A big thank you also goes to our chairman Ged Connolly-Thompson for arranging this great session hopefully we will have an opportunity to repeat this again some time in the near future.
