Motocross star’s speedway switch

SPEEDWAY newcomer Matt Williamson is the latest addition to the Buxton Hitmen’s 2013 line-up.

Williamson has competed in motocross since the age of six, winning multiple youth championships while riding for various manufacturers, but has now decided to make the switch to speedway.

The 20-year-old won the British Masters championship in 2010, which he led the following year before being sidelined by injury.

This year he finished third in the British 2 stroke championship and was rewarded with a place in the support race at the British round of the televised World Grand Prix, where he finished second.

He also attracted the attention of Monster Energy, who named him the most impressive rider of the meeting out of over 400 competitors, winning an all-expenses paid trip to Las Vegas.

Promoter Richard Moss said: “He has an impressive background in motocross and has caught the eye of a few speedway promoters, but we are pleased to welcome him to Buxton where we will do everything we can to help him progress.”

Williamson added: “I believe signing for Buxton is the start of what will hopefully be a very promising career as I feel I have a lot of potential and am willing to do whatever it takes to succeed.”
