SPEEDWAY will once again grace the sporting calendar in Buxton in 2013, organisers have confirmed.
Despite a difficult 2012 season for the Buxton Hitmen, the club’s promoters announced during last Saturday’s End of Season Presentation Evening that the sport would be back next year.
The final meeting of the year in October was filled with speculation over the future of the High Edge track, however the Moss family have decided to weather the financial storm and carry on.
They also plan to bring back as many of the 2012 team as possible, but one player who will not be returning is Team Captain Dean Felton after announcing his retirement from the sport.
His boots have been quickly filled by 46-year-old Tony Atkin, a veteran of the grass-track and speedway scene. His list of former clubs include Newport and Stoke, both of which he has captained.
Hitmen promoter Jayne Moss said: “Tony Atkin has guested for us several times over the last few years and always expressed an interest at joining the team, however due to rules allowing only one over-30 in a National League side we have never been able to include him.
“Dean announced his retirement and so we spoke to Tony and he jumped at the chance to move to us from Stoke”.
Atkin added: “I love riding the Buxton track and am really looking forward to next season now I’m part of the Buxton team.”
At last Saturday’s awards evening, Dean Felton received the Ken Moss Memorial Trophy in addition to the prize for Most Bonus Points Scorer. The award for Most Improved Rider went to Ryan Blacklock, while Adam Mckinna received the Top Scorer honour.
