Cyclist Oliver Snodden

Oliver Snodden is making a name for himself in cycling after an encouraging performance in an International Youth Tour.

Oliver, 11, hails from Chesterfield has been competing on two wheels from the age of seven.

The North West tour was a five-stage, three-day event which attracted some of the UK’s top riders and competitors from as far afield as Holland and the Czech Republic.

Split over three different venues, Preston University Sports Arena, Salt Ayre Sports Arena at Lancaster and the final stage at Blackpool Promenade, the race was much harder and faster than Oliver had been used to.

But he displayed his determination and avoided the many crashes to finish a creditable 21st place out of nearly 70 starters in the U12 category. On time, Oliver tied for 20th place.

It is the latest success Oliver has enjoyed since he started racing.

The Hasland Junior School pupil was the Midlands Mountain Bike champion at U8 and U10 level and was placed fourth in the British Schools’ Cycle Cross Association when he was in the U8 category.

In the U10 section of the British Schools’ cycle cross, Oliver has finished second and third while he was the English Schools’ East Midlands U10 champion.

Oliver is following in the family tradition with his cycle racing as his dad Graham was a competitor while his cousin is Shaun Snodden, a multiple national champion who has represented Great Britain at numerous World Championships and was a professional for the UK-based Recycling Team.
