Leatherday shows class with unbeaten 122

Chesterfield 1st XI 235-4, Caythorpe 1st XI 140 all out (Derbyshire Premier Cup) Chesterfield recorded a memorable cup win against one of the leading sides in the Nottinghamshire Premier League when visiting Caythorpe on Sunday.

The admirable application shown by Kevin Leatherday in surviving the new ball brought its reward as he began to prosper in a 118-run second-wicket partnership with Alex Hibbert.

With ten overs remaining Hibbert (45) was out to a miss-hit reverse sweep as he tried to increase the rate that had stubbornly stuck at about four an over.

But the rate did rise when the hard hitting Ross Whiteley joined an increasingly dominant Leatherday who launched a series of lusty blows in an explosive third wicket partnership that added 68 runs in just over half an hour.

Whiteley (28) was one of two wickets to fall with the rush for runs in the final two overs but Leatherday carried his bat for 122 in an accomplished innings that steered his side to the comparative safety of 235-4.

The express pace of Ed Jones combined with Luke Thomas's fine lines and movement wrecked the Caythorpe early order with the opening batsmen back in the pavilion before the end of the third over and the side in serious difficulties at 12-3 after half an hour.

Attempts at consolidation were undermined by Ross Whiteley who bowled a five-over spell at a cost of a single conceded off his first delivery and took wickets with successive deliveries to leave Caythorpe at 36-5 after an eventful opening hour that left Chesterfield in command of the cup tie.

Young left arm spinner Minesh Keshwala wrapped up the win for Chesterfield by taking the final four wickets.

Keshwala (4-30), Thomas (2-23) and Whiteley (2-1) were the main wicket takers as Caythorpe crumbled to 140 all out and a 95-run defeat.

The win places Chesterfield top of the final table for the round robin group with three wins out of three and the prize of a home quarter final tie which will be against Rolls Royce on Sunday, July 19.

Quarndon 1st XI 181-9, Chesterfield 1st XI 185-4

(Derbyshire Premier League)

A day earlier Chesterfield achieved a second successive league success with a comfortable win against Quarndon at Queen's Park.

There were ominous signs early on when Quarndon set off with a flurry of fours as former and current Derbyshire batsmen Mat Dowman and Paul Borrington took full advantage of some wayward deliveries to add 40 runs in the opening 30 minutes.

Peter Camm achieved a much-needed break through as Borrington (20) played on with the score on 43 after which Chesterfield exerted a degree of control on the game with the next hour producing only 41 runs for the loss of a further three wickets.

The innings closed at the 50-over limit with Quarndon on 181-9 and Thomas (3-37), Camm (2-34) and Lacey (2-21) the main wicket takers.

Chesterfield overcame the disappointment of the early loss of Leatherday and proceeded smoothly with a century partnership between Ben Slater (42) and Alex Hibbert (71).

With Graeme Wagg on Derbyshire duty the visitors attack was lacking in penetration and from 158-4 Thomas and Camm steered their side safely home to a six-wicket win with close to six overs to spare.

Chesterfield 22 points, Quarndon five points.

Chesterfield 2nd XI 198-9, Clowne Town 1st XI 77 all out

(Derbyshire County League 4N)

Chesterfield notched up their seventh win in nine starts with a 121-run victory at Clowne on Saturday.

Captain Joe Cooper led off with 35 and there were good contributions through the order including 33 from Minesh Kishwala as Chesterfield ran up an impressive 198-9 on a difficult batting pitch.

Andrew Hewiit (3-46) was the leading wicket taker for Clowne but the best bowling of the day came from Chesterfield's Tim Kirk who exploited the conditions to great effect in taking 6-15 and extinguishing any remaining hope that the home side had after a difficult start.

Chesterfield continue in second place and look for another good result on Saturday when they play Little Eaton at Queen's Park.

Clowne Town four points, Chesterfield 27 points.

Chesterfield 3rd XI 219-8,

Shipley Hall 3rd XI 129-8

(Derbyshire County

League 8N)

Mick Davison with 43 and Alex Davison (45) set Chesterfield off to a good start and a fine 64 from Dean Hopkinson took the side through to 219-8 in spite of Gary Hickinbotham's 4-30 which included three return catches.

Perrijay Blair (2-22) and Daniel Bennett (2-13) made life difficult for Shipley Hall who concentrated on saving the game which they managed in spite of the loss of further wickets to Hopkinson (2-15) and Stuart Baddeley (2-19).

They closed on 129-8 and the 90-run margin gave Chesterfield a good points return from the winning draw.

Shipley Hall eight points, Chesterfield 19 points.
