Warwickshire wicketkeeper Richard Johnson has signed for Derbyshire on loan for the rest of the season.

The 23-year-old gloveman enjoyed a short recent spell at the County Ground as cover for the injured Tom Poynton. And despite being recalled by his parent county following an injury to Tim Ambrose last week, Johnson has since been granted permission to return to Derbyshire for the remainder of the campaign.

After starring with a match-winning 79 in the final appearance of his previous loan spell versus Yorkshire Carnegie, Johnson scored 49 for Warwickshire in their LV= County Championship draw with Surrey which concluded on Monday.

Head Coach Karl Krikken said: “The signing of Richard increases our strength in depth in a key position for this decisive period of the season. It will allow Tom Poynton the opportunity to fully recover from his injury and to regain match fitness before competing for a place in the first team once again.

“Our primary focus is promotion and the addition of Richard strengthens us for the run-in. He has a fantastic opportunity to further prove himself at first-class level while hopefully helping us achieve something special too.”

Johnson is available for selection ahead of the LV= County Championship fixture versus Kent starting on Thursday at 11am.
