BUXTON and District Athletic Club’s Steve Watson claimed a hat-trick of wins in the third Pavilion Gardens 5K last weekend.
Watson completed the course in a personal-best time of 17 minutes and nine seconds.
The next three male finishers were all ex-Buxton AC runners. In second place was Chris Mellor, running for High Peak Tri, in 18.48, ahead of the Staffordshire Moorlands pairing of Paul Drabble (19.03) and Terry Fowler (19.21).
In her first outing at the distance, Buxton’s Rachel Chatwin led the ladies’ field home in a creditable time of 19 minutes and 42 seconds, ahead of Caroline Pimblett (22.25) and Liz Edward (23.02).
The first junior boy home was Buxton’s Elliot Meylan in 20.03, a personal best for the course, while the first junior girl was Isobel Ivings, also Buxton AC, in 26.23.
The next 5K event will take place at 9am on Saturday December 8.
More personal best times were achieved at the Tatton Half Marathon recently. Mark Pursell finished in one hour, 27 minutes and nine seconds, while Phil Wainwright completed the course in one hour, 50 minutes and 47 seconds.
On the fells, at the recent 9.5-mile Passing Clouds fell race, Darran Hawkins had a storming run to come home in 19th place, out from a field of over 200 runners.
Next home was Mark Halsey (76th), followed by Roland Meylan (112th), Rob Wallis (128th), Will Houghton (140th) and Dave Forshaw (155th).
The ever-popular 4.5-mile Dovedale Dash attracted a huge field of 1,450 runners. First home for Buxton, and third lady, was Rachel Chatwin.
Junior member Elliot Meylan was the next Buxton runner home in 280th place. Pete Bailey was 312th, Roland Meylan 400th, Helen Brunt 655th, Paul McWha 890th, junior Edward Ivings 1084th and Krissie Ivings 1088th.
The annual Roaches Fell Race, usually a distance of 15 miles, saw an increase to 18 miles this year due to vegetation problems, so a tough race became even tougher for the 140 runners who set out from Meerbrook to climb not only the Roaches, but then have to scale the daunting Shutlingsloe hill halfway round.
Mark Cudahy was first Buxton finisher in an excellent 21st place in 2.58.56. Fellow club member Mark Halsey arrived at the start as the rest of the field headed to the hills, but gamely set off late and finished well in 71st place in 3.22.50.
A number of club members ‘Legged it Round Lathkill’ at the weekend, a 7.5-mile event out of Over Haddon. Mark Pursell was first home in 17th place (54.18), Pete Bailey 72nd (63.42), Dave Forshaw 111th (69.52) and Helen Brunt 130th (72.03). In the junior race, Buxton’s Jacob Buckley and Will Tighe ran away with admirable first and second places.
