Doncaster Dome: Nurse warning for Elfidh

Main event: Tyrone Nurse

Main event: Tyrone Nurse

  • by Ashley Ball Boxing

TYRONE Nurse is predicting another heartbreaking shortfall for Joe Elfidh at title level.

Huddersfield fighter Nurse takes on Elfidh from Harworth in the main event for the Central Area light-welterweight belt at Doncaster Dome this Friday, February 15.

Nurse has only lost one of 25 fights as a professional and that was in the Prizefighter final. He is confident of ensuring that Elfidh’s second crack at a title falls short.

The 23-year-old told The Star that he is more cultured in the ring. He said: “Boxing is all about levels and I believe that I am a couple above Joe.

“He’s ex-Army so he’s bound to be strong and fit but I’ve heard that he comes in with wild hooks and that will play straight into my hands.

“I’m there to upset the applecart. I know Joe was stopped by a body shot against Kieran Farrell but anybody can be hurt by a well-placed one so I’m not reading too much into that.

“I doubt it has done much to dent his confidence but I’ll be coming with my usual flare and I want to put on a good, winning performance.”

Nurse’s claims are not stemmed in arrogance. He is familiar with the local boxing scene after fighting as an amateur for Mick Wale when he had a gym in Mexborough and also for Bob Wright’s Parson Cross stable.

He has also had fights in Sheffield and Barnsley as a professional and beat Sheffield’s former ABA champion Liam Cameron four times as an amateur.

“I boxed on local shows for Mexborough Athletic and Parson Cross and was selected as a South Yorkshire fighter even though I’m from Huddersfield,” continued Nurse.

“I know a lot about South Yorkshire boxing because I was involved in it and got wins over Andy Townend, Jamie Sampson and Liam Cameron.”

Interestingly, the exact same belt, that Elfidh and Nurse fight for, has been contested for before at the same venue. In 1997, Sheffield’s Wayne Windle stopped hometown fighter Dean Bramhald in the fourth round to become Central Area champion.

Andy Roberts also won the Central Area title on the same bill with a ten round decision over Marcus Duncan at bantamweight.
