CHESTERFIELD Hockey Club 1sts returned to winning ways with an emphatic 6-0 home victory over Nottingham.

Australian signing James Clifford scoring a hat-trick, Ashley Higginbottom bagged a brace and Chris Cowley completed the scoring.

The home side took the lead early on when Adam Bointon’s through ball set up Cowley with just the ‘keeper to beat and he buried his shot into the bottom left corner.

After sustained pressure, Chesterfield doubled their lead when Cowley turned his marker and found Clifford in the circle and his quick shot nestled into the bottom right.

The third came just before half time when Higginbottom neatly deflected Bointon’s shot over the stranded goalkeeper.

The second half started as the first finished with a goal straight away from Clifford, who reacted first to John Nash’s cross.

The goal of the game followed from a flowing passing move out of defence and into attack, ending with Andy Hodgson picking out Clifford in front of goal to score his third. Higginbottom got his second of the game when he turned in the rebound from a Nash penalty corner strike.

Meanwhile Chesterfield’s second string also won, beating South Notts 4-1 on the road .

The 3rds drew 2-2 at home with Tamworth.
