Chesterfield Town march into quarter-finals of Derbyshire Cup

CHESTERFIELD Town beat higher opposition in the form of Dronfield 4-1 to get through to the quarter-final of the Derbyshire Divisional Cup.

With the luxury of having 14 players to choose from, for the first time this season, midfielder Josh Aitkin came back into the side and scored a header within 10 minutes.

A by now trademark Milly throw was converted into the top corner.

Tackles were flying in, but Town kept their heads, although conceded a soft equaliser. The impressive Andy Hicken placed a left foot strike into the corner to restore Town’s lead.

Moments later good work from Hicken again fed the ball to Aitkin who had a good touch on the chest, the ball fell kindly to Spencer who did what he does and thrashed the ball into the roof of the net.

Spencer made it four early in the second half in a swift and deadly counter attack.

Town began to tire due to the effort and level of performance already shown and lost their shape.

But Dronfield had no answer to defensive performances from the excellent Shane Nunn and MOTM Neil Hollingworth.

It was an excellent result for the Matlock and District League side who displayed what they are capable of.

Chesterfield Town held on and will now play Wirksworth Ivanhoe on January 26, 2013.

The only fixture for next week is the postponed Derbyshire Cup North match between AFC Lea Holloway and Rowsley 86 FC.
