Carol is a golden girl!

Carol Wengraf has gained a European fencing gold medal – at the age of 72!

And Hathersage-based Carol has now set her sights on a bigger title at the world fencing championships in Moscow in October.

The British over-70s epee and sabre champion, Carol went to the European Veterans showdown in Hungary as second seed in the sarbe category.

The sprightly septuagenarian beat her Sheffield Fencing Club teammate Connie Adam 10-4 in the semi-final before facing Russian Ksenia Tadzhieva in the final.

It was a close run thing but the Derbyshire woman displayed her class by winning 10-8 to take gold in the 70-plus section.

In the epee category Carol also sparkled.

She reached the vompetition's semi-final but lost out to the No1 seed and had to settle for the bronze medal.

Carol, who was twice the European over 60s sabre champion, is now training hard ahead on her march to Moscow.
