Bowery and Morgan take Blues through

Walsall 1, Chesterfield 2

Jordan Bowery, given a rare start, and Dean Morgan grabbed the goals that allowed the Spireites to progress to the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Reuben Reid scored for the Saddlers in between and the hosts hit the goal frame close to the end, but Chesterfield's first-half performance gave them the edge.

The manager made three changes from the side that drew at Macclesfield. Ian Breckin and Jack Lester were rested while Danny Whitaker dropped to the bench. In came Bowery, in attack, Derek Niven and, on the wing, Morgan.

However the most surprising selection saw ex-Saddlers man Dwayne Mattis switch from the engine room to the heart of defence. He also sported the skipper's armband.

Chesterfield's opener came in the 13th minute. Craig Davies nodded well to Drew Talbot whose right wing cross picked out Bowery who headed home, via the post.

Just seven minutes later, the Saddlers were level. Chesterfield struggled to clear an attack and the ball fell to Reid, 16 yards out, and his half volley through the crowd was unstoppable.

Davies provided an assist for Morgan to open his Spireites account with a fine angled effort with 33 played.

Matt Richards was denied by determined defending just before the end of a terrific first half.

The Spireites kept it tight at the back in the opening second-half exchanges, though Jon Macken twice went close and Manny Smith headed over from a rare home corner before the hour mark.

Bowery, who was played an excellent game, hit wide from the left corner of the box but he ran out of options after nicking the ball off Oliver Lancashire and heading for goal and Davies hit just over from distance then narrowly wide as Chesterfield began to boss things again. A tiring Morgan should have put things beyond doubt but he lifted the ball over a virtually empty net after Brain had only managed to parry a Whitaker shot.

Jamie Paterson rattled the post as Walsall looked to seize on that stroke of luck but they were unable to carve out the chance they needed to prevent Chesterfield's first-ever cup win over their long time rivals.
