The icy blast of winter hit sporting fixtures across north Derbyshire for six over the weekend.

Grabbing the headlines was the top v bottom clash at the B2net Stadium between table proppers Chesterfield FC and League One leaders Charlton Athletic.

A Friday pitch inspection deemed the pitch okay to host the game but overnight temperatures fell to minus ten and the match had to be postponed on Saturday morning.

Alfreton Town and Matlock Town also saw their scheduled matches called off.

In addition, the cold temperatures blew the whistle on all the Chesterfield Sunday and Alfreton Sunday League games.

Since the turn of the year no fewer than 134 fixtures in the Chesterfield NAPIT League have fallen victim to the weather, heralding the prospect of midweek games as the evenings grow longer.

Rugby clashes on Saturday also to be postponed but hopes are high that the forthcoming weekend will see matches played.
