Baraweez can ensure the Betway Lincoln at Doncaster remains on northern soil.

Trained in Norton by the trusty Brian Ellison, the five-year-old gelding is surely overpriced in a market dominated by Newmarket raiders.

Mange All, Gm Hopkins and Zarwaan are jostling for ante-post favouritism, but it might pay to seek a bit more value.

Look no further than Baraweez, who has an ideal profile for a handicap of this nature.

Formerly in the care of French whiz Freddy Head, the gelded son of Cape Cross has been campaigned with characteristic poise by Ellison.

Four wins from just 13 starts - it should really have been five but he was demoted into second at Newcastle last June - tells its own story about his progressive nature.

But it was his performances in Ireland in the summer which saw him marked down as a well-above-average handicapper.

Baraweez ran a blinder to finish third in the Topaz Mile at Galway, after which he trousered £50,000 when victorious back at the Festival a few days later.

Next stop was Leopardstown in September, when he showed a touch of class to come from off the pace and claim a super-valuable seven-furlong handicap by half a length.

Though that rubber-stamped his versatility in terms of extreme goings - it was very quick at Leopardstown and very soft at Galway - even Baraweez found things too demanding in the Balmoral Handicap at Ascot on Champions Day.

Ellison’s inmate is no handicap snip for the Lincoln, which is hardly a shock given last season’s exploits, but he is just about on an acceptable threshold on 9st.

Doncaster’s galloping nature should also help Irish jockey Chris Hayes, who has a long-standing alliance with Ellison and is one of the wisest judges of pace in his homeland, deliver a late challenge from stall 11.
