Chesterfield golf pro George Woolgar secured second place on his first Evolve Pro Tour event of the season in Spain.
Woolgar teed off at Hacienda Riquelme, in Murcia, in to tough conditions with a strong wind and had to deal with quick and exposed greens.
A first round score of two over par (74) saw him tied sixth and two shots off the lead before 55mph winds blew away any chance of a second round.
It meant a change to a two-round tournament and the Chesterfield pro made a strong start, chipping in for eagle on the second and birdying the fourth.
The winds made shot selection difficult but an eagle on the 11th and a birdie on the 12th saw Woolgar at five under playing in tough conditions.
A cross wind from the left threw in an extra twist, however, he finished strongly with two pars leading to a three under round of 69 and one under for the tournament. At that point he was the leader in the clubhouse but was beaten to first place by a single shot and finished second.
“I was pleased but also a little gutted as I knew that my score could have been a lot lower and I left a lot out there, especially the first round,” said Woolgar. “But for my first event back and not having played under tournament conditions for a while, it was a great result and I’m really looking forward to the season.
“The work I’ve done with Steve Astle on my swing and Paul Farquharson in the gym has made some serious gains, which is great to see as I’ve been working really hard.”
