On a scorching hot day at Silverlands, Chesterfield comfortably ran out 3-0 winners against Buxton with goals from Armand Gnanduillet, Jimmy Ryan and Eoin Doyle.
Spireites boss Paul Cook fielded no less than seven trialists over the course of 90 minutes which saw two very different teams in either half.
Two of them, Ritchie Humphreys and Jamie Devitt, did their chances of earning a contract no harm with encouraging displays.
Former Sheffield Wednesday and Hartlepool man, Humphreys , in particular showed he still has an eye for a pass.
While Devitt displayed quick feet and a desire to take people on at every opportunity.
But it was the hosts who had the ball in the back of the net first through skipper Steve Istead.
Buxton striker Leon Osborne, once of Bradford City, struck the foot of the post from the edge of the area with Aaron Chapman well beaten.
Istead followed in to took the ball home but the near linesman’s flag saved the visitors’ blushes.
The experienced Humphreys demonstrated his skill when he anticipated a pass then flighted a cross field ball over the head of Charlie Johnson for Tendayi Darikwa to strike at goal.
A good interchange between Devitt and Darikwa then presented an opportunity for Armand Gnanduillet to score six yards out but the striker scuffed his shot wide of Tom Turner’s right hand post.
The opening goal came after an almost carbon copy move which this time saw Gnanduillet hit the ball into the turf and into the top corner of the net, giving Turner no chance.
In a complete change around of outfield players, Chesterfield supporters got their first glimpse of new recruits Sam Morsy, Eoin Doyle, Jimmy Ryan and Gary Roberts.
Tenacious midfielder Morsy, wearing number five, showed good chest control before hitting a volley over the cross bar.
Osborne was causing the Spireites’ back line trouble again. This time he beat three defenders and set up Istead who sliced wide from 20 yards.
Ryan, who had a sighter moments earlier, unleashed an unstoppable drive into the bottom corner of the net from 25 yards after good work from Roberts and Jay O’Shea.
Doyle soon put the game to bed from close range after Roberts’ long range effort cannoned back off the bar.
Ryan tried his luck once more from distance and O’Shea had his head in his hands after blazing one over the bar with the goal at his mercy as the Spireites eased to victory.
Cameron Mason replaced Aaron Chapman between the sticks with ten minutes of the game to go for his first first team appearance.
The squad had been put through their paces earlier in the day and showed fitness and determination to get through half a match each.
Huddersfield Town are next up for the Spireites on Saturday, July 13 at the Proact Stadium in what will undoubtedly be a change of pace for Cook’s men.
