Matlock Town and Chesterfield FC fans were left disappointed this week when it was confirmed the long-standing pre-season friendly between the two clubs will not go ahead this summer.
The early season match at the Reynolds Stadium on Causeway Lane is said to have taken place for at least the last 40 years but has been sidelined due to a hectic pre-season calender.
Matlock secretary Keith Brown said: “There has always been a close affinity between both the clubs and their supporters over very many years.
“The numerous enquiries we have been receiving from both sets of fans over recent weeks shows the great interest in this particular match, which we sincerely hope will be first on the schedule for next season.”
Brown confirmed the early request for the match had been submitted in accordance with previous years but accepted Chesterfield had arranged more home fixtures.
The League Two side travel to Buxton on July 6 before facing Huddersfield at home on July 13. They welcome two-time former European champions Nottingham Forest on July 16 before an away trip to Southport on July 20.
The Spireites then have two more home games with Wolves on July 23 and Sheffield Wednesday on July 27.
A Chesterfield spokesman said: “We have simply been unable to fit in a trip to Matlock, due to the number of pre-season fixtures we are committed to playing in.
“We enjoy a good relationship with Matlock and look forward to visiting the Reynolds Stadium again in the future.”
