Matlock Town could face repeat of Derbyshire Senior Cup final in next season’s FA Trophy

Matlock Town could face a repeat of last April’s Derbyshire Senior Cup final in next season’s FA Trophy.

Matlock could face the club they thrashed in memorable style at Chesterfield, Gresley FC, in a home tie at the First Qualifying Round stage on October 31, but only if the Moatmen come through an away tie at fellow Evo-Stik NPL First Division South outfit Romulus in the Preliminary Round on October 17.

Romulus ground share with Sutton Coldfield Town on the Coles Lane all weather surface and if the Romans are victorious in the opening round, it will be a first ever meeting for the Gladiators.

But Gresley should be favourites to get through, and the 7-0 hammering handed out by Matlock in that final will still be fresh in the memories of Gresley players, management and fans, even though it will be a vastly changed Matlock side facing them..

Hat-trick hero in the final, Jamie McDonagh has returned to Sheffield United along with defender Julian Banton and winger Otis Khan, while goalkeeper Jon Kennedy has moved to Worksop Town.

The expected FA Cup First Qualifying Round draw did not materialize as the FA decided to release just the opening two rounds, the Extra Preliminary and Preliminary Round ties last Friday.
