Ye Olde Nags Head finish bottom of Sunday League Division Six

The battle of the basement in The Napit Chesterfield and District Sunday League Division Six saw Ye Olde Nags Head and Renishaw Rangers TFC share a 1-1 draw.

This was not enough to give Ye Olde Nags Head the chance of avoiding the wooden spoon in what was their last game of the season.

Renishaw were camped in the home side’s half for most of the first period thanks to the strong wind, which would aid Ye Olde Nags Head in the second half. The conditions were proving to be a tester with chances at a premium and it was 23 minutes before the first chance fell to the visitors’ Daniel Bateman whose goal bound effort deflected away for a corner.

The opening goal came just one minute later when Matthew Freeman broke through on the inside right to fire past the out coming Onie Adams in the home goal.

Renishaw had a golden opportunity to double their lead when referee Megan Power awarded Renishaw a penalty on 38 minutes.

It was the visitors keeper McCauley Pearson who stepped up to take the spot kick and his opposite number Adams parried the ball back to him, but the visiting custodian lashed the rebound over the bar.

Ye Olde Nags Head had the wind assistance for the second period and much as they camped in the Renishaw half it took a penalty on 68 minutes to level the scores.

Referee Power had seen a push and retiring Nags player Martin Cox stepped up to put the home side back in the game.

As both sides looked for the winner Ye Olde Hags Head’s Josh Whittaker had a 20 yard effort deflected away for a corner.

At the other end Adams came out on three occasions to deny Renishaw before in the final minute a snap shot from James Thompson flew just wide as Ye Olde Nags Head were denied an elusive winner that may have given them a chance of avoiding the basement position with Renishaw Rangers TFC still having one game to play.
