Derbyshire Senior Cup Third Round
Glossop North End 1, Mickleover Royals 4
THERE was little evidence of pre-Christmas cheer on the pitch at Surrey Street last Tuesday as Glossop North End bowed out of their last cup competition of the season at the hands of lower-league Mickleover Royals.
Neither goalkeeper was really troubled until the half-hour mark, when a shot from Royals midfielder Robert Fox brought the first real save of the match from Ben Proctor.
A foul by Nick Allen just outside the box led to a free-kick which Royals striker Dave Carr drilled low to Proctor’s right to open the scoring in the 32nd minute.
The Hillmen had the ball in the back of the Royals net on 55 minutes only for Ben Connolly’s effort to be ruled off-side. Ten minutes later, however, Connolly did net the equaliser when he slid in on a through ball to divert it past Royals goalkeeper Ash Warner.
Lee McGregor saw red following an altercation with Royals winger Kirk Francis, who five minutes later got himself on the score sheet as he swept in a cross from the right-hand side following another free-kick.
The game gradually settled down and Mickleover played some good passing football. Their third goal came courtesy of a shot by Adam Birch.
The Hillmen continued to press forward looking to salvage something from the match. Oakes went close in the 83rd minute when his curling shot was headed off the line.
The Royals’ final goal came in the 87th minute when Carr again scored from a free-kick in what was a carbon copy of his first goal.
