Mark Atkins was full of praise for leading scorer Lewis McMahon scored his 18th goal of the season on Saturday against Grantham Town.

The former Sheffield Wednesday and Notts County striker’s fifth minute header put Matlock on the road to victory against the Gingerbreads.

Atkins said: “He’s done exceptionally well, I expected 15 to 20 goals from him this season so to have 18 now is fantastic and thoroughly deserved.

“He works very hard and takes the chances which come his way. Don’t forget also he’s missed two penalties as well, having not missed one in his career before this season. He’s been excellent.”

McMahon was on loan from Gainsborough last term before signing a permanent deal with Town in the summer.
