North West Counties League Premier Division
Glossop North End 2, Bacup Borough 0
EX-GLOSSOP manager Brent Peters brought a physically strong Bacup side to Surrey Street looking for a win which would launch the visitors up table, but it wasn’t to be.
The Hillmen quickly took control of the match and, except for a period at the beginning of the second half, never looked like losing that control.
The match was seven minutes old when Mark Battersby opened the scoring from the penalty spot, after his strong run had been halted by Bacup full-back Shane Birtles.
Bacup worked hard in midfield but failed to convert possession into chances and Ben Proctor was largely untroubled in the Glossop goal.
On 31 minutes Battersby doubled Glossop’s advantage with another strong run into the box following an exchange with Jonny Hirst.
The ball was controlled beautifully before being propelled left-footed past the diving Jones for Battersby’s 17th goal of the season.
Bacup defender Matthew Bryan was unlucky to see his fine free-kick rebound to safety off the crossbar, before a fine cross from the left by Martin Cosgrave eluded Bacup striker David Gray and ran on to Paul Socha who wastefully blazed over the bar.
The visitors started the second half well with some good control in a midfield effort orchestrated by former Glossop player Arron Kirk, but despite this Bacup could muster only the isolated threat on a defence well marshalled by captain Kelvin Lugsden.
The best effort of the second half came from Glossop substitute Ben Connolly, whose 77th-minute effort came back off the angle of post and crossbar.
Glossop: Proctor, Jones (McGregor (L)), Allen, Hazelden, Lugsden, Gamble, Williams, Browne, Ormesher (Connolly), Battersby, Hirst (McNee).
