Football rumours: Transfer deadline day moves that failed, including Cavani to Arsenal, Adebayor and Berbatov to Villa and Calhanoglu to Manchester United

Transfer deadline day was more memorable for the moves that didn’t happen, than the ones that did.

Most talked about was the aborted David de Gea to Real Madrid deal, with the Spanish giants and Manchester United now playing the blame game over the debacle.

And West Brom are left to pick up the pieces of their relationship with Saido Berahino, after his transfer to Tottenham failed to materialise, despite four bids.

The Daily Mirror reports today that Arsenal opted not to move for Edinson Cavani, because the PSG star would have no sell-on value.

According to the London Evening Standard, Spurs were ready to pay up to £20m for Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama, 24, in exchange for either Andros Townsend, 24, or Erik Lamela, 23, but the Saints were unimpressed.

Tottenham also didn’t manage to shift Emmanuel Adebayor to Aston Villa, because the striker consulted with his pastor and decided against the move, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Former Manchester United forward Dimitar Berbatov was unable to complete a shock move to Aston Villa, says the Daily Mail.

And news from Turkish Football suggests United made a late £26.4m bid to sign Hakan Calhanoglu from Bayer Leverkusen.
