Johnston was signed by Crewe from Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division South neighbours Leek Town in January 2014 on an initial six-month-deal following a successful trial spell.

Originally with Kidsgrove Athletic, he had his Gresty Road contract extended to January 2015 in the summer.

He was loaned straight back to Leek for the remainder of the 2013/14 season, and has mainly been playing in Crewe’s U21s this season.

Johnston, 20, is yet to make his professional debut for Crewe, but was named in Alex’s 18-man squad for their trip to Crawley Town earlier this month.

Permission has been given by Crewe for him to play in the FA Trophy and Derbyshire Senior Cup during his stay at the Impact Arena, he will wear squad number 27 and be with the Reds until January 1, 2015 inclusive.
