Chesterfield FC’s youngsters will be hoping to clinch the Youth Alliance League title on Saturday after their dreams of double glory ended on Tuesday evening.
Dave Bentley’s youth team faced Rushden and Diamonds in the final of the Midlands Youth Cup at the B2net Stadium and hopes were high when Jordan Burrow gave the Spireites a second-minute lead.
The clash attracted 903 spectators and Rushden levelled shortly after the half hour before taking a 2-1 lead eight minutes into the second-half.
But there was renewed hope for the Spireites U18s when Gerome Palmer pulled Chesterfield level in the 75th minute.
It was, however, short-lived as Rushden netted a third goal in the 81st minute which turned out to be the decider.
Disappointing it may have been but the lads deserve great credit for battling their way to the final.
Chesterfield can claim the league title on Saturday when they entertain Bradford on Saturday. The match kicks off at 11am at Warminster Road.
