'˜We will be fine', insits defiant Danny Wilson

In the face of a wretched run of results Danny Wilson is defiant that he can turn Chesterfield's fortunes around.

The manager, whose side are without a goal or a point in six league games, said improved performances in the last two matches show that the Spireites ‘will be fine’ in League One.

The league table shows them a point off the bottom and four from safety.

But what Wilson called a ‘dominant’ display in the 2-0 defeat by Coventry on Tuesday makes him believe that results will come.

“We need to get a win under our belt, that’s for sure, to break this run,” he said.

“However we get it I really don’t mind.

“As long as we keep playing like that we’ll be fine.”

The manager’s belief that Chesterfield deserved something from their trip to the Ricoh was backed up by the opposition themselves – much to his chagrin – and a colleague who he trusts.

“I’m getting all the plaudits from the Coventry people after the game, which annoyed me because they beat us and said how well we played. That really bothers me,” he said.

“I do the same to other people. But at the same time they’re telling the truth. We did play well. We’ve got to make sure we start getting wins with performances like that.

“Someone from within the game said to me tonight you’d think we were a top six side and I’ll certainly take that because I trust his judgement. But we lost and we have to arrest that.”

His players might have pleased him with their endeavours, but referee John Brooks attracted Wilson’s ire.

He fumed: “Throughout the game we’ve looked so comfortable, we’ve been the dominant team virtually throughout the game and then a decision against us by the referee, the corner is no where near a corner, we saw it from here, it’s a dead ball kick and he gives a corner, they score from it.

“Maybe that’s down to ourselves being aggrieved at having to defend a corner in the first place, but at the same time decisions by a referee have changed the outcome of the game.”

The goalscoring drought, which stands at over nine hours in league action, might be affecting his players mentally, but Wilson still backs his attackers to find the goals Town so desperately need.

“If it’s psychological we’ll have to deal with it in that respect,” he said.

“But if someone goes in one on one, or a cross comes in, I don’t think they think about it, it’s instinctive. I’d put them in that position in the next game and I bet they’d score.”

Chesterfield visit Colchester in the FA Cup on Saturday and may still be without Dan Gardner who has a hamstring injury.
