Preston 0, Chesterfield 0
Neal Trotman rattled the bar with a last-minute header in a fairly low-key and even game.
Preston enjoyed the most of a poor first-half but John Sheridan’s side had the bulk of the second and enjoyed the better chances, but were unable to nick the vital goal.
Liam Ridehalgh shook off the dead-leg he picked up in the Tranmere game to mean the back four was unchanged while Alex Mendy and Craig Westcarr came in for the rested Jack Lester and the sadly-recalled David Davis.
After two early Spireites corners the first shot was delivered by North End’s Holroyd but his long range, angled effort flew wide. Preston retaliated with two of their own flag kicks but the opening 20 minutes of the game passed by with little to enthuse.
Mendy burst forwards to build a head of steam for Chesterfield but the move ended when Jordan Bowery hit wide from distance.
Graham Cummins looped a header well over and Andy Proctor hit wide as defences reigned superior with the Spireites rearguard the busier of the two. Former Lillywhite Trotman headed a Ridehalgh free-kick over in a rare away raid.
Mendy shot weakly wide after a fine 50-yard run, and Daniel Devine almost sliced a Bowery cross into his own net just before the break.
Two Mark Allott long throws caused early problems after the restart and Chesterfield enjoyed more of the second-half action with Mendy curling a shot just wide ahead of the game’s closest call, right on 90.
Whitaker’s left-wing corner found the head of Trotman who rattled the bar and Allott drove the rebound wide.
The Spireites looked the most likely side to nick it at the death but, despite the results elsewhere, a point was a decent return from a tricky looking fixture.
