Chesterfield 1, Stevenage 0
Promotion-seeking Chesterfield stretched their lead at the top of League Two to five points thanks to a 1-0 victory over Stevenage.
The deciding goal came in the 42nd minute from man of the match Drew Talbot who cut in from the wing to fire in an unstoppable shot at the near post from the edge of the area.
Stevenage had been giant killers the previous week - knocking Premier League Newcastle United out of the FA Cup with a 3-1 win - but Chesterfield were on top in a game of few clear-cut chances.
Spireites substitute Deane Smalley had a chance to double his side’s lead with his first touch but his close control let him down and the visiting keeper was able to clear.
It was Chesterfield’s tenth home league victory at the B2net and manager John Sheridan said: “We battered them in the first half and credit is due to Drew. He has been our most consistent player this season.’’
