Plenty more entertainment but only a point for Chesterfield who came from behind when Sam Clucas equalised Jonathan Forte’s penalty. Both sides went all out for the win but neither could muster up a second goa
A goalless first half between two committed sides produced plenty of entertainment but no goals.
Oldham’s Jones first time 20 yarder caused Lee no issues whilst Doyle’s header from Spireites Jones cross was similarly gathered with ease by Rachubka amongst a terrific atmosphere at the ground. Dieng nicked the ball of Doyle’s toes as he prepared to shoot following solid Roberts work.
Lee had to dive well right to palm away a Winchester 25 yarder for the game’s first corner which the keeper punched away with aplomb. Brian Wilson was booked for hauling back Johnson as he broke free and from the second phase of the free-kick, Evatt headed inches wide.
Margreitter and Lee had a communication breakdown but Forte was unable to capitalise.
Lee had to fling himself right to push a Forte shot wide after the ex-Blade slipped his markers, the Latics were unable to carve a chance from the corner.
Clucas rifled a 30 yarder very close after Darikwa quickly broke after Lee caught a Kelly free-kick and the keeper had to back-track to catch a Mills chip forwards.
Spireites won their first corner and Evatt and Doyle both almost got in telling headers but neither could quite find the right touch.
Poleon slipped by Ryan and Evatt on a 40 yard run but he shot disappointingly, low and at Lee. Brian Wilson, beaten all ends up by Morsy and already in the book, shoved the Chesterfield man over right on the box-edge, but Ryan hit the wall from the free-kick.
Rachubka parried a long range snap shot from Ryan and James Wilson did ever so well to get to the rebound first. Evatt blocked a Poleon turn, conceding a corner, Lee gathered Mills delivery and Poleon was carded for a foul on the keeper as he prepared to clear.
Clucas got to a Roberts cross but was unable to get any control on his volley as the atmosphere pumped up even more with the game being non-stop. Doyle, at full stretch, headed wide from Roberts’ cross as the tempo remained high whilst Clucas headed a Ryan cross wide at the far post.
Winchester earned a corner that was wasted but Forte soon hit just over after a positive run and Morsy blocked from Philliskirk as the game stretched out again.
Poleon almost headed in within a minute of the restart, Spireites’ Achilles heel of a minute this season, they’ve conceded four in that minute, losing three of the games, but the Oldham man headed Mills’ cross wide after Lee was unable to reach the excellent cross.
Kelly burst into the box, fed Philliskirk who was clipped by Margreitter and referee Eltringham, well positioned, awarded a penalty which FORTE stepped up to convert low and centrally in the 49th minute, another example of a poor start to the second half by Paul Cook’s men.
Jones teased out a corner for the hosts but Johnson’s ball in was cleared. Darikwa found space on the right and his cross squirmed to Roberts whose shot was blocked by a combination of Rachubka then Dieng, Lee Johnson was apoplectic on the touchline. Poleon hit wide as the game continued at a pace and a half.
Ryan burst into the box and James Wilson had to be sharp to clear as Paul Cook looked to change things with Gnanduillet stripped and ready to come on, but then Jones and Roberts were involved and Roberts dinked a beauty into the box for CLUCAS to convert on the volley at full stretch with 57 on the clock.
Ryan’s shot was regulation for Rachubka whilst Clucas won a corner after his strong run, Evatt’s header was partially blocked but within seconds he was in the book for a foul on Philliskirk.
Ibehre came on for Poleon for Latics and, ten minutes after he was initially readied, Gnanduillet came on for Jones, Clucas moved to left-back.
Mills right wing free-kick wasn’t gathered by Lee and a corner was won, Ibehre couldn’t quite get on the end of it. Dayton replaced Winchester for Oldham.
Ibehre got free in the box and Lee had to tip-over, the corner came to nothing. Roberts found Johnson and his low teasing cross just eluded the stretching Doyle. The game was as stretched as you could imagine with both sides going all-out for glory.
Doyle’s cross was headed out for a corner and Evatt’s header was hooked clear by Brian Wilson.
Chesterfield were certainly not satisfied with a point and kept pushing on, Ryan, Johnson, Doyle and Darikwa all got into positions to cross in during the same attack but Athletic’s defence stood firm.
O’Shea replaced Roberts on 85 and Gardner came on for Johnson just a couple of minutes later. Rachubka had to dive full stretch to push Morsy’s shot wide and Gnanduillet’s header from the corner caused no defensive issues.
Kusunga came on for the injured Brian Wilson.
