Relive all the key moments of the 1996/97 FA Cup semi-final at Old Trafford as Chesterfield locked horns with Middlesbrough.
In one of the most unforgettable matches in the competition’s history, the Spireites of English football’s third tier took on Premier League Boro.
Juninho, Emerson, Ravanelli and co were much-fancied but Chesterfield, led by skipper Sean Dyche, would go on to win the hearts of thousands.
Leading 2-1, thanks to goals from Andy Morris and a Dyche penalty, against the ten men of Boro, the Spireites thought they’d sealed a place at Wembley.
But referee David Elleray ruled that Jon Howard’s shot hadn’t crossed the line, when replays showed otherwise, and Boro would go on to score two more.
It looked like Chesterfield were heading out until the last minute of the second half of extra-time when Jamie Hewitt sent a looping header in to make it 3-3.
It meant a replay at Hillsborough nine days later that Bryan Robson’s multi-millionaires won 3-0 to book a place in the final against Chelsea.
