OPINION: All we Chesterfield fans can do is pray for a miracle

Can the Spireites possibly stay up?

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem very likely, looking back on a dreadful start to 2017.

They have picked up only one win since Christmas, that being against the only side currently sitting below them in the league, Coventry City.

They are without a win in February and are facing a Millwall team in their next game, who have recently pulled off an astonishing FA Cup upset to beat the current Premier League champions, Leicester City, in their last game.

The Spireites’ performance in their last game, however, was nowhere near as impressive.

A good first half performance from the Blues, against a Bury side also in and around the relegation places, and Chesrterfield deservedly went in at the break a goal to the good with a strike from Christian Dennis.

However, The Shakers came out in the second half raring to go and had many chances to go ahead, including a penalty, which was well saved by new signing Thorsten Stuckman,.

Tom Anderson committed the foul which led to this penalty and was subsequently sent off leaving Town to play the remaining 15 minutes of the match with ten men.

In this final quarter of an hour, Chesterfield really had their backs to the wall and the ten men had to defend for their lives as Bury began an onslaught.

Chesterfield’s hopes of a clean sheet were brought to an end via a stunning strike from Tutte. Just as Chesterfield thought they were going to hold on for the draw, Stuckman got caught on the ball by Miller and he fired the ball into an open net.

Jubilation for Bury and heartache for Chesterfield.

Many Chesterfield fans knew that this was a must-win game and from sitting in the stands after the game many of the Town faithful have now, if they hadn’t before, accepted that this year is not their year.

A fair few loan signings and a new manager were brought in in January, as a desperate attempt to beat the drop, but the Spireites currently sit in 23rd place and are seven points from safety, with a tough game schedule, including Bolton, Scunthorpe and Sheffield United away.

Therefore I am, beginning to believe that all a Chesterfield supporter can do is hope and pray for a miracle from Gary Caldwell and his men.
